AI Cameras Revolutionize Maritime Safety & Efficiency

29 April 2026
AI cameras are being positioned not just as sensors, but as early-warning systems that can flip maritime operations from reactive to proactive. Smart Ship Hub, a digital vessel performance platform, is urging the industry to embrace AI-enabled camera technology while insisting on clear governance and genuine respect for crew expectations.

The systems fuse high-definition video, onboard processing, machine learning, and direct integration with vessel management software to become active partners in daily operations. Captain Nagpaul, a voyage performance specialist with 15 years at sea, argues they can spot fire risks and hazardous conditions before they escalate. “Historically, safety improvements often followed incidents rather than preventing them,” he said. “The use of AI-enabled cameras can change this dynamic by supporting early fire detection and identifying situations that could lead to accidents.” The cameras monitor cargo handling, mooring operations, and blind spots in high-traffic zones, producing time-stamped visual records for investigations and maintenance planning.

Shore-based teams can connect via secure mobile apps to guide crews through procedures in real time, turning remote expertise into an operational asset. Yet Nagpaul cautions against deployment that feels punitive. “When introduced without clarity or context, they can be perceived as surveillance tools rather than safety enhancements. If poorly tuned, they can become distractions rather than tools for improved performance.”

Smart Ship Hub CEO Joy Basu frames the technology not as a replacement for human judgment, but as an amplifier. “I see CCTV cameras together with AI enablement or AI camera systems as powerful tools. They are not substitutes for experience or professional judgement, but they can enhance safety, improve operational awareness and strengthen the connection between ship and shore.” His stance suggests a shift in mindset: technology is most effective when crews see it as collaborative, not controlling.

The call to action is clear. As fleets adopt AI cameras, the emphasis must be on transparency, training, and trust-building. The goal isn’t just smarter ships—it’s safer crews, sharper decision-making, and a maritime culture that values prevention over correction.
